Why does self harm feel good?
When you self harm it releases a rush of endorphins that make you feel good. Your brain can start to crave that rush and that’s why it’s addicting. Sooner or later though, you need to hurt yourself more or deeper to get that same rush, the release.
Your brain connects feeling better after self harming with self harm, so the next time you feel whatever it was you felt when yourself harmed last, you’ll want to do it again.
Self harm is an (unhealthy) way to cope with physical or emotional distress. It switches one pain for another and lessons the emotional pain. The relief is short lived, however, which leaves you vulnerable to more self harm episodes.
